Breaking Barriers and Building Inclusion Journey to Empower Persons with Disabilities

Spark Minda Foundation

In a world striving for progress and equality, the importance of ensuring equal rights, opportunities, and attention for every individual cannot be overstated. Amidst the global push for inclusivity, accessibility, and empowerment, one group that has long been advocating for these fundamental principles is individuals with disabilities. These individuals, regardless of their abilities, deserve to be recognized, included, and empowered on a global scale.

One of the pivotal steps in this journey towards inclusivity and empowerment is reflected in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a set of 17 global goals established by the United Nations to address various social, economic, and environmental challenges. At the heart of these goals lies the aspiration to create a world where every individual, regardless of their age, sex, disability, race, ethnicity, origin, religion, or financial status, is not only recognized but actively included. Goal 10's Target 10.2, in particular, focuses on the empowerment and promotion of social, economic, and political inclusion for all, with a specific emphasis on marginalized groups such as persons with disabilities. This target serves as a beacon guiding efforts to reduce inequalities and promote diversity and inclusion.

In this context, the role of Spark Minda Foundation's SAKSHAM program cannot be overlooked. The program is committed to promoting social development and achieving the SDGs and recognizes the profound impact of their efforts in empowering individuals with disabilities. Spark Minda Foundation's SAKSHAM program plays a crucial role in empowering individuals with disabilities in India by offering training and mobility aids. Its alignment with the Accessible India Campaign reflects a broader commitment to promoting inclusivity and accessibility throughout the country, which is a significant step towards building a more equitable and harmonious society.

The numbers alone underscore the significance of this commitment. According to the 2011 Census of India, approximately 2.21% of the population reported having a disability. These individuals, often faced with unique challenges, deserve the opportunity to thrive just like anyone else. This is where Saksham's "Empowerment of People with Disabilities" program, launched in 2015, comes into play. Aligned with the Rights of Persons with Disability Act introduced by the Government of India, this comprehensive initiative provides holistic support to persons with disabilities.

From providing assistive aids and devices to facilitating UDID registration (Unique Disability ID), from offering skill development assistance to livelihood support, Saksham's program encompasses a range of interventions to address the multifaceted needs of individuals with disabilities. By embracing a 360-degree approach, Saksham acknowledges that true empowerment goes beyond mere assistance; it involves recognizing and nurturing the potential of every individual.

Saksham's impact radiates not only across India but also beyond its borders. The organization's remarkable journey began with its launch in Indonesia, and it has since established three permanent "Centres for the Empowerment of People with Disabilities" in Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. Additionally, Saksham conducts camps in various locations, including Indonesia, Vietnam, Jammu and Kashmir, and more within India. This wide-reaching approach reflects Saksham's commitment to inclusivity, ensuring that individuals with disabilities from diverse backgrounds can access the support they need.

The program's objectives are as straightforward as they are powerful: provide accessible and assistive aid, facilitate UDID registration, enable skill development, and foster employment opportunities for persons with disabilities. The collaborations Saksham forms with government bodies and non-governmental organizations further amplify their impact. This united effort illustrates that progress is most effective when stakeholders work together towards a common goal.

Saksham's impact speaks volumes. The organization's efforts have touched the lives of 16,525 persons with disabilities through the provision of assistive devices in their centers and empowerment camps across various regions. Furthermore, Saksham's contribution extends to facilitating 1,769 UDID registrations and assisting 1,003 individuals in securing employment and entrepreneurship opportunities within the organization itself, spanning the length and breadth of India.

A shining example of Saksham's commitment is the success story of Aman Tyagi. Aman, who joined the organization's team in January 2020, has proven to be an integral part of the assembly line. His stability in employment has not only improved his quality of life but has also opened doors for him to pursue his passion for cricket, an endeavor he now enjoys with colleagues and friends. Aman's journey exemplifies how empowerment leads to not just financial stability but also the fulfillment of personal aspirations.

Saksham's dedication is unyielding. The organization's commitment to expanding its reach through additional camps, partnerships, and collaborations underscores thitsetermination to empower even more individuals with disabilities. This unwavering dedication resonates in every endeavor they undertake, fostering an environment where inclusivity isn't just a concept but a living reality.

In a world where progress is often measured by growth and development, Saksham sets an example of how progress can be genuinely meaningful when it transcends numbers and statistics. Their tireless efforts reflect a vision of a world where inclusivity and equality are not just goals but the cornerstones of a society that embraces diversity and empowers all individuals. Saksham's journey is a testament to the transformative power of empathy, dedication, and unwavering commitment to a more equitable and inclusive future for everyone, regardless of their abilities.
