Beyond Education: How Holistic Development Programs Transform Young Lives

At Milaan Foundation, we believe that true empowerment requires more than classroom learning - intellectual and academic growth must be strengthened with social and  emotional learning, along with physical development. To equip today’s youth—especially those from marginalized communities with the tools to thrive, we focus on transformative skills for resilience, leadership, and social change. This philosophy drives our Girl Icon and Unmukt programs, which provide critical life skills and advocacy training for youth to meet real-world challenges head-on.

Girl Icon Program (GIP): Milaan’s flagship Girl Icon Program is a life-skills based leadership initiative that empowers adolescent girls through career preparation, life skills, and leadership training, enabling them to address social issues in their communities and break cycles of poverty and gender inequality.

Unmukt Program: Unmukt uses a sports-based, gender-synchronized approach to empower rural youth in the Sitapur district of Uttar Pradesh to prevent violence against women and girls, adopt leadership roles, and advocate for change.

The Need for Holistic Youth Programs in India

India’s young population, with over 250 million individuals aged between 10 and 24, represents a significant force for future progress. Yet, much of this potential remains untapped, particularly in rural areas where the educational system often lacks the resources to foster comprehensive youth development. Life skills, critical thinking, and leadership capabilities are essential in navigating modern challenges but are frequently missing in rural education. Recognizing these gaps, the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020) emphasizes holistic education, promoting values, life skills, and wellness alongside academic achievement to cultivate well-rounded, capable individuals prepared for a globalized world.

In rural India, more than half of youth aged 15 to 29 lack access to skill-building resources. Programs like the Unmukt Adolescent Program are structured to bridge this gap by introducing sports and life skills training tailored to young people in these regions, fostering teamwork, resilience, and self-confidence. Unmukt’s gender-synchronous approach, where male and female mentors work with youth based on shared experiences and understanding, has proven effective in building trust and reducing gender-based stigmas.

Milaan’s Approach to Holistic Development

Milaan Foundation’s commitment to empowering young women is embodied in our Girl Icon Program (GIP). The program, active in 3 states - UP, MP and Karnataka; is designed to support adolescent girls through career guidance, life skills education, and leadership training. Research demonstrates that such targeted interventions can positively impact career outcomes for young women, helping them overcome structural barriers in employment. In fact, girls who receive life skills training are 50% more likely to finish their education and obtain meaningful employment.

Moreover, GIP integrates advocacy training, equipping girls to address pressing local issues like child marriage and access to sanitation facilities. By enabling girls to champion causes in their local communities, we are witnessing a generation of young leaders emerge who advocate for both personal and social transformation. This type of empowerment is crucial, as studies show that countries where young women have strong community roles see improved public health outcomes and economic resilience.

Skills-Based Learning and Career Preparation

Beyond life skills and advocacy, Milaan’s programs emphasize career preparedness—a vital area of need given that youth unemployment in India stands at over 24%. Our Girl Icon program’s skills-based learning includes practical training in financial literacy, digital literacy, and career readiness. Such training is indispensable for rural youth facing an increasingly digital economy; even basic digital skills can increase employability by nearly 50%.

Moreover, our sports-based curriculum in Unmukt is more than just physical activity. It cultivates a sense of discipline, improves mental health, and fosters social connections—all of which are essential for career success. Physical activity has been shown to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression in youth, enhancing overall mental well-being, which is critical given the mental health challenges among Indian youth exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Empowering Youth for Long-Term Impact

Programs like Milaan’s Unmukt and Girl Icon are vital not only because they offer practical skills but because they transform young lives and communities. Empowering youth to take charge of their education and future benefits society as a whole, as empowered youth become informed, engaged citizens. Studies reveal that when young people have access to comprehensive education and skills training, they contribute more meaningfully to their communities, furthering social and economic progress at the grassroots level.

As India continues to evolve, the need for such programs grows. Holistic youth development through accessible, relevant, and skill-focused programs will be a cornerstone in creating a resilient, capable generation ready to shape a more equitable, prosperous future. Milaan Foundation remains committed to this vision, ensuring that young people—especially those from marginalized backgrounds—are equipped not only to survive but to thrive.
