Empowering Aspirations Through Skills: Stories from Project Umeed
In the rural villages of Pandikunta and Jallipalli in the Sri Sathya Sai district of Andhra Pradesh, two bright and determined students in Class 9, Sahithya and Mahalakshmi, dreamt far beyond their circumstances. However, like many rural students, both girls faced a common challenge of limited access to the technology and exposure needed to shape and pursue their aspirations.
Sahithya often found herself wondering, I want to do something meaningful, but where do I begin?
Mahalakshmi, from a modest farming family, shared a strong desire to learn, but she had little opportunity to explore new skills, particularly in the digital space.
A structured learning initiative called Project Umeed was a turning point for both girls. Carried out in collaboration with Teach for Life supported by Trees for Life, India Development and Relief Fund (IDRF), Guru Krupa Foundation, and Sehgal Foundation in the US, the project is being implemented on the ground by S M Sehgal Foundation (India).
The initiative creates equitable learning opportunities for rural children by establishing digital libraries. By providing a digital platform with access to relevant offline study material for students and teachers, subject understanding is enhanced by audio-visual content and building awareness and familiarity with digital devices for online learning.
A Digital and Life Skills Awareness program course is conducted by S M Sehgal Foundation through a facilitator within the digital library. Students learn about the operation of digital devices, the fundamentals of MS Office and email communication, and the use search engines to gain information and ensure cyber safety. Components of the initiative also strengthen students’ social and emotional skills, including self-reflection, goal-setting, problem-solving, decision-making, gender sensitivity, understanding of the roles of village-level institutions and how to access services and benefits under government schemes.
Sahithya and Mahalakshmi were both students of the Digital and Life Skills Awareness program.

A session on Goals and Planning became a moment of clarity for Sahithya, who expressed her ambition for the first time: “I want to become a teacher and educate girls in my village.”
Her approach to learning transformed as she dedicated more time to her studies, began waking up earlier, seeking guidance from teachers, and actively using new learning tools. Her efforts were reflected in her academic performance, improving from 75% to 95%. Beyond academics, her confidence grew, eventually giving a class presentation on goal-setting and inspiring her peers to think about their own futures.
Mahalakshmi also discovered a new world through digital learning with Project Umeed. Without prior exposure to computers, she started with the basics and gradually built her skills through consistent practice and learning to work with MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Her newly acquired skills and confidence soon translated into academic success.
During a school project, she was chosen as the team leader due to her proficiency in MS Office. Her team created the best presentation in the class, earning appreciation from teachers and peers for clarity and creativity.

The academic journeys of Sahithya and Mahalakshmi reflect a deeper transformation that are marked by clarity of purpose, confidence, leadership, and a willingness to grow and support others. Their stories demonstrate a simple, powerful truth: when young people are equipped with the right guidance, skills, and opportunities, they can redefine their futures. Project Umeed initiative serves as a bridge to building confidence, aspiration, and opportunity that enables rural youth to unlock their true potential.
