Flipkart's CSR Triumph in Diverting 3000 Tonnes from Landfills
Flipkart Group has taken significant steps to address the concerning issue of growing landfills in India. Through its ambitious Zero Waste policy and embrace of the circular economy approach, it has successfully diverted approximately 4,000 tonnes of non-hazardous solid waste over the past year across four facilities certified as Zero Waste under the Total Resource Use and Efficiency (TRUE) program.
TRUE-certified projects like Flipkart’s must meet stringent resource management requirements, diverting at least 90% of a facility’s waste from landfills, incineration, and the environment. Flipkart’s TRUE Gold-certified facilities spanning 1.8 million square feet are located in Farrukhnagar (Haryana), Uluberia (West Bengal), Malur (Karnataka) and Renaissance (Maharashtra).
Flipkart has surpassed TRUE's minimum certification requirements by achieving over 97% waste diversion rates across all four sites. This exceptional performance puts Flipkart at the leading edge of environmentally-conscious companies in India, serving as a benchmark for sustainable e-commerce practices that add value for business, society, and the planet.
Enabling a Circular Economy
Flipkart continues to play an instrumental role in catalyzing a circular economy by enabling the productive use of materials that would otherwise be discarded as waste. Within its premises, Flipkart has deployed the ‘Clean Campus’ movement across warehouses to foster employee education and engagement around waste segregation and responsible consumption.
The company also works with supply chain partners and local industries to cycle scrap materials back into production cycles rather than sending them to landfills. For instance, Flipkart balances packaging consumption against scrap disposal by supplying packaging manufacturers with plastic and paper scrap to be reused as raw material for fresh products.
This closed-loop, circular system helps diminish reliance on virgin natural resources and mitigates greenhouse gas emissions from resource extraction and production. Flipkart has activated the Circular Economy approach across 13 warehouse sites, encompassing approximately 50% of its total paper scrap generation.
Zero Waste Facilities Setting New Standards
Flipkart’s Zero Waste journey began in 2018 when it mapped its waste footprint across facilities. After conducting waste audits and material flow analyses, the company began working towards TRUE Certification for its sites by improving waste diversion through segregation, maximizing reuse and recycling, and building employee awareness.
In 2022, four of Flipkart’s fulfillment centers became TRUE Gold Certified, validating their achievement of over 90% waste diversion and embracing sustainable materials management practices. These facilities now serve as Zero Waste benchmarks, paving the way for other e-commerce companies in India to follow suit.
The Zero Waste facilities showcase Flipkart’s commitment to responsible consumption, reuse, and material recovery while avoiding incineration and landfill disposal. They are early examples of the company’s ambitious sustainability strategy encompassing energy efficiency, renewable energy usage, electrified vehicles, and sustainable packaging, amongst other initiatives.
Impact Created
With its TRUE Gold Certified Zero Waste facilities, Flipkart has created tangible environmental and social impact:
Flipkart’s TRUE Gold Certified Zero Waste facilities have created a significant positive impact. Over 4,000 tonnes of waste have been diverted from landfilling, avoiding substantial greenhouse gas emissions. The four facilities have achieved an exceptional 97% average waste diversion rate beyond TRUE’s minimum 90% certification requirement. Compared to conventional warehouses, waste generation has dropped by 75% thanks to rigorous segregation and material recovery programs.
Across 1.8 million square feet of fulfillment center area, Flipkart has transitioned materials management to sustainable models centered on reuse and recycling. Over 500 employees have been educated and empowered to embrace responsible consumption and support waste management efforts.
So far, 13 warehouse sites have been activated to cycle scrap paper back to packaging manufacturers instead of disposing of it. This has enabled over 50% of Flipkart’s total paper scrap volume to be reused as raw material, reducing dependence on virgin resources.
These Zero Waste facilities ultimately prove that e-commerce operations can align profitability with sustainable development. Flipkart also estimates that implementing its Circular Economy approach across all sites can produce INR 3-4 crore in annual savings from lower raw material and waste management costs. The social and environmental merits are invaluable.

Charting an Eco-Conscious Course in E-Commerce
Flipkart has distinguished itself as a pioneer in eco-conscious commerce by strategically aligning business success with responsible practices, value creation, and environmental stewardship.
Its Zero Waste journey started modestly in 2017 with waste audits and feasibility studies to understand its waste footprint and identify reduction opportunities. The company then initiated segregation of infrastructure and processes, used data analytics to optimize material consumption, trained warehouse staff on best practices, and actively engaged supplier and partner networks to cycle scrap back into productive uses.
By 2021, Flipkart was ready to leap by targeting Total Resource Use and Efficiency (TRUE) Zero Waste certification for critical facilities. The third-party TRUE certification process was rigorous, requiring meticulous material flow tracking to validate waste diversion rates and prove the adoption of sustainable materials management. Flipkart successfully curated data for four of its largest fulfillment centers, spanning nearly two million square feet, highlighting its comprehensive waste reduction programs.
Quality and quantity data verified the continuous diversion of more than ninety percent of the landfill materials. Each facility was inspected by a trained team of TRUE auditors who were mandated to carry out several activities, such as verifying the correct classification methods, collecting information on how the processes occur, and the degree of preparedness of staff members, among others. The management’s dedication was demonstrated in a systematic commitment to integrating Zero-waste into the Flipkart organization.
From 2018 onward, after a thorough assessment of all these sites, four were awarded the best TRUE gold recognition by Flipkart in 2022. This established Flipkart, amongst other environment-friendly organizations, to lead India’s green frontier.
Industry Leadership in Sustainable Commerce
In this regard, Flipkart seeks to set a benchmark for other companies in India regarding ethical operations while still maximizing profits.
Its Zero Waste journey and TRUE Certifications earned recognition from Peter Templeton, President and CEO of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and GBCI, who noted that Flipkart's initiative is remarkable as it works to the benefit of its staff, neighbors, and customers worldwide.
Flipkart wants to keep up its current fast-moving sustainability plan. By 2021, all of its warehouses used paper-based wrapping instead of plastic to reduce the utilization of the latter. There is much to consider under its sustainability program, too, such as taking up renewable energy, electrifying logistic fleets, and constructing green buildings.
One example is India’s e-commerce market, where Flipkart adopts Zero Waste Leadership, aiding the country in developing sustainability by providing opportunities for both business benefits and societal well-being.
