From the Heights of Ladakh to the Heart of Communities – Bisleri's Blueprint for Sustainability
Groundwater levels are cascading at an alarming rate, glaciers are shrinking, and the planet is warming. The treasured resource for humans, water, is getting harder to find as climate change tightens its threshold on the planet. In India, where rural economy still relies heavily on agriculture, this problem is about survival more than just statistics. As traditional water sources face unprecedented pressure from climate change, rural communities are seeing their way of life disappear in places like high-altitude mountains to arid plains.
High in the Himalayas, where the mountains seem to touch the sky, a story of resilience unfolds. In the village of Sumoor, situated at 10,270 feet amidst the breathtaking peaks of Ladakh—the Land of High Passes—a severe water crisis threatened the community's survival. Ladakh's arid, cold climate depends on snowmelt and glacier runoff for water, but climate change has reduced availability due to fluctuating snowfall and rising temperatures. A local farmer remembers, "Every year, we would wait to sow crops, but due to lack of water, we neither had vegetation nor hope," talking about the challenges that engulfed this town of over 210 households.
Today, Sumoor tells a different story. Through Bisleri International's (Bisleri) 'Bisleri Greener Promise' initiative, the village's reservoir has been repaired and restored, transforming it into what locals now call their 'Reservoir of Hope.' By ensuring a steady water supply, Bisleri is helping to secure the agricultural future of Sumoor Village and promoting the overall well-being of its residents. A local farmer from Nubra Valley shares with joy, “Now, we no longer fear droughts, can confidently grow our crops, and envision a sustainable Ladakh for generations to come.” The restored reservoir has brought more than just water, it has restored hope.

Sumoor's transformation is not an isolated chapter in Bisleri's broader commitment to water conservation. In 2023, the organization also implemented a successful water conservation project in the neighbouring “Kyagar village” which enabled local farmers to overcome drought conditions and improve their yields. By partnering with local communities and making them agents of change, Bisleri aims to build a resilient framework for water security that can withstand the pressures of climate change. The restored water sources serve as both a lifeline for farming and a foundation for economic stability. With each new reservoir, families can remain entrenched with their roots rather than looking to migrate elsewhere. Looking forward, Bisleri continues to expand its programs, ensuring that each drop and each action contribute to a greener, more sustainable future for communities across India.
Bisleri International, a pioneering name in the hydration sector, is recognized not only for its iconic bottled water but also for its deep-rooted commitment to sustainability. One of India’s most trusted brands, it has actively been investing in environmental stewardship through concentrated efforts in water conservation and plastic recycling to address critical challenges facing vulnerable communities across the country.
At the heart of Bisleri’s sustainability efforts is its flagship program, Project Nayi Umeed, which has constructed or restored over 250 check dams in Gujarat and Maharashtra. These structures are carefully designed to capture surface water, replenish groundwater, and have harvested a remarkable 25 Billion liters of water. The impact is visible on the ground, where over 53,557 families now benefit from reliable water access, and more than 17,928 acres of barren land have been transformed into lush, productive farmland. This initiative not only conserves water but also revives livelihoods, bringing prosperity and stability back to rural communities.
Beyond water conservation, Bisleri’s Bottles for Change initiative aims to resolve the environmental issue of plastic waste by promoting proper collection and recycling. This project operates across Delhi NCR, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Leh Ladakh and raises awareness amongst communities about responsible plastic waste management. The organization has been instrumental in transforming clean plastic waste into useful products like fabric, handbags, and window blinds, fostering a circular economy that benefits both the environment, and the communities involved.
Bisleri’s approach to sustainability illustrates how a brand can use its influence on address pressing environmental issues. The organization’s efforts demonstrate that corporate responsibility, when pursued with vision and dedication, can make a significant difference, anchoring communities, protecting traditional livelihoods, and building resilience against environmental challenges.
As climate change intensifies threats to water security and environmental health, Bisleri’s ongoing commitment to sustainability offers a blueprint for corporate environmental stewardship. Through these investments, Bisleri International exemplifies how a beverages brand can go beyond quenching thirst to preserve essential resources and foster sustainable, thriving communities.
The story of Bisleri's green initiatives is, a story of transformation – of barren lands turned fertile, of waste turned valuable, and of communities turning from despair to hope.
