Okhla Bird Sanctuary Gets an Upgrade from Bisleri International's CSR Program

India is renowned for its rich biodiversity and is one of the top 17 most megadiverse countries in the world. Its ecosystems host a vast array of plant and animal species, some of which are found nowhere else on the planet. The country’s natural wealth is reflected in its 106 national parks, 18 biosphere reserves, and over 500 wildlife sanctuaries.

However, despite these remarkable numbers, India faces significant challenges in preserving its natural resources. Poaching, deforestation, urbanization, and pollution continue to pose serious threats to the flora and fauna that call India’s protected areas home.

The Okhla Bird Sanctuary, located at the border of Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, is one such natural reserve that is affected by these issues. This sanctuary, which spans around 400 square kilometers, is home to over 300 species of birds, including migratory species that visit each year.

While it remains an important ecological area, the sanctuary has faced problems like pollution, waste management issues, and aging infrastructure that hinder its full potential as both a habitat for wildlife and a site for education and recreation.

Recognizing these challenges, Bisleri International—a leading Indian brand with over 54 years in the market—decided to take action. The company, known for its premium bottled water and commitment to sustainability, initiated a corporate social responsibility (CSR) drive to improve the Okhla Bird Sanctuary.

Bisleri’s efforts included organizing a large-scale cleaning drive and upgrading the sanctuary’s infrastructure with new educational display boards. Through this initiative, the company aimed to help preserve the natural beauty of the sanctuary while enhancing the visitor experience.

Bisleri International's Initiative to Preserve Okhla Bird Sanctuary

As part of its commitment to environmental sustainability, Bisleri International launched a project focused on improving the Okhla Bird Sanctuary. This project was spearheaded in collaboration with the UP Forest Department, which manages the sanctuary, and involved two primary components: a massive cleaning drive and an overhaul of the sanctuary's educational signage.

The first part of the initiative was a comprehensive cleaning campaign. Over time, Okhla Bird Sanctuary had accumulated substantial waste, including plastic bottles, wrappers, and other litter left behind by visitors.

Such waste poses a serious threat to the health of wildlife, especially aquatic species, which may ingest harmful materials or become entangled in debris. In response, Bisleri organized a mega-cleaning drive, mobilizing a group of volunteers to remove trash from the sanctuary, particularly around its key feature—the large man-made lake.

Enhancing the Visitor Experience

In addition to the cleaning drive, Bisleri International took steps to enhance the educational infrastructure of the sanctuary. One of the key improvements was the installation of new, informative display boards that highlight the various bird species found in the sanctuary.

These boards were designed with the dual purpose of educating visitors about the sanctuary’s rich biodiversity and promoting greater awareness about the importance of conservation.

Before the upgrade, many of the existing bird description boards were outdated, with some boards missing essential information or displaying poorly printed images. Bisleri recognized that for visitors to truly appreciate the sanctuary and its inhabitants, clear and informative signage was essential.

The new boards feature high-quality images of birds, along with detailed information about each species, including their behavior, feeding habits, migration patterns, and conservation status. The signage is bilingual, with the information provided in both English and Hindi, making it accessible to a wide range of visitors.

These newly installed boards also have a larger size, which makes the text and images clearer and more visible from a distance. This upgrade has not only improved the overall aesthetic appeal of the sanctuary but also turned the space into an educational hub for nature enthusiasts, students, and tourists.

By providing clear and engaging information, Bisleri’s initiative helps visitors gain a deeper understanding of the importance of protecting biodiversity and natural habitats.

In addition to the bird description boards, the sanctuary also received new directional and signage boards. These signs guide visitors along designated paths and help them navigate the sanctuary with ease.

The goal is to reduce visitor foot traffic in sensitive areas and ensure that tourists remain on paths that are least disruptive to wildlife. By providing better signage, Bisleri International has enhanced the visitor experience, making it more educational, convenient, and environmentally conscious.

A Mega-Cleaning Drive

A key component of Bisleri’s initiative was the mega-cleaning program aimed at improving the environmental health of Okhla Bird Sanctuary. Plastic pollution is a global issue, and it poses a particularly severe threat to wildlife in natural habitats.

In sanctuaries like Okhla, plastic waste can be ingested by birds or aquatic creatures, leading to injuries or even death. Furthermore, improper disposal of trash not only affects wildlife but also degrades the natural beauty of the area, making it less attractive for visitors and tourists.

Through the cleaning drive, Bisleri International, with the support of the UP Forest Department and local volunteers, made significant strides in removing harmful waste from the sanctuary. Volunteers worked in teams, collecting plastic bottles, wrappers, and other non-biodegradable materials that had accumulated over time.

The cleanup also extended to the lake area, where debris was cleared from the water and surrounding shorelines. This initiative was crucial in reducing the environmental footprint of the sanctuary and ensuring that both birds and aquatic species were protected from the harmful effects of waste.

Impact Created

The comprehensive CSR initiative led by Bisleri International has had a profound impact on the Okhla Bird Sanctuary. The cleaning drive has created a safer, cleaner environment for the sanctuary’s wildlife, particularly the bird species that inhabit the area.

By removing plastic waste and other pollutants, Bisleri has helped protect both terrestrial and aquatic animals from the harmful effects of trash. The sanctuary’s ecosystem, which relies on clean water and a balanced habitat, is now in better condition, thanks to these efforts.

The installation of new educational display boards has also had a lasting impact on visitors. These boards provide valuable information about the bird species and other wildlife in the sanctuary, increasing awareness about the importance of conservation.

By educating visitors on the birds’ behaviors, migration patterns, and the threats they face, Bisleri has played an important role in fostering a deeper understanding of the natural world. The new signage has improved the overall visitor experience by making the sanctuary more navigable and accessible, encouraging more people to appreciate and learn about its biodiversity.

Way Forward

Looking ahead, Bisleri International remains committed to its sustainability goals and environmental responsibility. As part of its broader “Sustainability 2.0” initiative, the company is focused on creating a greener future through ongoing CSR activities that promote water conservation, waste recycling, and environmental protection.

Bisleri’s CSR efforts will continue to target natural habitats like Okhla Bird Sanctuary, where the company plans to execute more cleaning drives, ecological restoration projects, and educational campaigns aimed at fostering a culture of conservation.

The company’s focus on sustainability is not just about taking responsibility for the environment but also about encouraging others to do the same. Through its initiatives, Bisleri hopes to inspire both individuals and organizations to take action in preserving India’s rich biodiversity and natural habitats.

Bisleri plans to expand its CSR efforts to other wildlife sanctuaries and protected areas across India. By focusing on sustainable practices, waste management, and education, the company aims to make a meaningful contribution to preserving India’s natural heritage for future generations.

Through these continued efforts, Bisleri International is committed to enhancing the health of India’s ecosystems and promoting a more sustainable, environmentally conscious way of living.
