PNB Housing Finance: Strengthening Urban Healthcare Access Through a Mobile Medical Units

Access to quality healthcare remains a persistent challenge for economically vulnerable populations living in urban areas. Despite the presence of hospitals and clinics in cities, many low-income communities struggle to access timely medical care. Long distances to healthcare facilities, overcrowded public hospitals, high treatment costs, and the risk of losing daily wages often discourage individuals from seeking medical attention. 

For daily wage workers and migrant labourers, even a single day away from work can mean the loss of essential income. As a result, many people delay or completely avoid treatment for common illnesses, allowing minor health issues to develop into more serious conditions.

Urban informal settlements and labour communities are particularly affected by this gap in healthcare access. These areas frequently lack nearby primary healthcare facilities and preventive health services. 

The absence of routine medical consultations also reduces awareness about hygiene, disease prevention, and early diagnosis of chronic conditions. Addressing these barriers requires innovative solutions that bring healthcare closer to those who need it the most.

To bridge this gap, PNB Housing Finance Limited, through its CSR arm Pehel Foundation, has launched a Mobile Medical Unit initiative in partnership with Wockhardt Foundation. The Mobile Medical Unit was flagged off in New Delhi to deliver primary healthcare services directly to underserved urban communities. 

By taking medical services to the doorstep of vulnerable populations, the initiative aims to improve healthcare accessibility, promote preventive care, and support healthier communities.

Expanding Primary Healthcare Access in Urban Communities

Primary healthcare is widely recognised as the foundation of an effective healthcare system. It plays an essential role in early diagnosis, prevention of diseases, and management of common health conditions. However, many underserved urban communities have limited access to these basic services. In such areas, individuals often rely on irregular medical visits or informal treatment options, which may not provide proper diagnosis or consistent care.

The Mobile Medical Unit initiative addresses this challenge by bringing essential healthcare services directly into neighbourhoods that lack easy access to medical facilities. The unit travels to targeted locations where economically vulnerable communities live and work, ensuring that residents can receive consultations without needing to travel long distances.

This approach significantly reduces the barriers that prevent people from seeking medical help. For many individuals, the presence of a mobile clinic within their community allows them to receive treatment without missing work or spending money on transportation. The initiative therefore encourages people to address health concerns early instead of postponing care until the condition becomes severe.

By making healthcare more accessible and convenient, the programme also contributes to building trust between communities and formal healthcare providers. When residents see consistent medical services in their neighbourhoods, they become more willing to engage with healthcare systems and seek professional advice for their health concerns.

Bringing Essential Medical Services to the Doorstep

The Mobile Medical Unit is designed to function as a fully equipped primary healthcare service on wheels. It is staffed by a qualified MBBS doctor, a pharmacist, and a trained driver who together provide a range of medical services during community visits.

The doctor conducts routine consultations and diagnoses common health issues such as fever, infections, respiratory problems, and other everyday ailments. Patients receive appropriate treatment and medicines through the pharmacist, ensuring that they can begin recovery without delay. In cases where individuals require specialised care or advanced treatment, the unit also facilitates referrals to nearby hospitals or healthcare centres.

In addition to treating immediate medical conditions, the Mobile Medical Unit also supports the management of chronic diseases. Conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and respiratory disorders require regular monitoring and medication. 

For many people living in underserved areas, maintaining this continuity of care can be difficult due to financial and logistical constraints. The mobile clinic helps address this challenge by providing follow-up consultations and guidance for ongoing treatment.

Preventive healthcare is another important focus of the programme. During visits, the healthcare team conducts awareness sessions that highlight the importance of hygiene, sanitation, balanced nutrition, and early medical intervention. These sessions help residents understand how everyday practices can influence their overall health.

Building on Previous Success and Expanding Reach

The launch of the current Mobile Medical Unit marks the third phase of the initiative led by PNB Housing Finance Limited in collaboration with Wockhardt Foundation. Earlier phases of the programme have already created a meaningful impact in communities that face limited healthcare access.

Through previous deployments, the initiative has reached more than one lakh beneficiaries across various underserved urban locations. A large portion of these beneficiaries includes construction workers and their families, who often migrate between cities for work and may not have stable access to healthcare services. These communities frequently live in temporary settlements or work sites where medical facilities are scarce.
