Impact Investing for Social Sector Funding Evidences and Experiences
Kartik Desai is the Executive Director of Asha Impact, an impact investing and policy advocacy platform which runs a capital-on-call ‘virtual fund’ (multi-family office) for Indian business leaders, UHNIs and philanthropists to invest in scalable, for-profit social enterprises. Asha Impact also works with the Indian government on sector-specific advocacy based on the experience of its investees and building the market for blended instruments like impact bonds through its non-profit trust. Prior to setting up Asha in 2014, Kartik worked with two pioneering impact funds in India – Lok Capital and Aavishkaar – was an investment banker with DSP Merrill Lynch, and consulted with the Rockefeller Foundation and the UNDP in the US and Africa.
Akanksha Sharma is a globally acclaimed International Development & Public Policy Specialist carrying an eclectic global experience spread across 4 continents. She has many titles to her name like- "100 Most Influential Social Impact Leaders Globally", "Asia’s Top Sustainability Leader"; ‘Young CSR Leader’, "Sustainability Leadership Award" amongst many others. Akanksha has 13+ years of diverse experience in leadership roles at both large corporations and UN agencies, where she led change for development through strategic decision-making and policy discourse on Social Impact, ESG, Strategic Philanthropy, Sustainability, Impact Investing & others. She currently leads Global Social Impact and Sustainability for STL (Vedanta Group). She has mentored non-profits and has served on several boards and policy committees.
Arindom Datta has been working for Rabobank for the last 14 years and has over 28 years of experience in Rural Finance, Cooperative, Microfinance and Agribusiness banking. Arindom is responsible for the sustainability banking initiatives on knowledge, risk management and business development. He also oversees the Rabo Foundation projects in blended finance, technology/innovation and access to finance in the agriculture sector. Arindom is further passionate about following the Agtech developments and its significance for small holder farmers. He previously worked with National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, IDBI Bank and CARE. Arindom is a Mathematics honors graduate from St. Stephen’s College and has an MBA with a specialization in Finance and Strategy from IIM Kozhikode.
Shantanu, based in Gurgaon, is currently the CEO of Social Finance India which is a not for profit consulting intermediary focused on designing long term outcome oriented, pay for success developmental programs, syndicating appropriate blended finance for those programs and then proving effective governance for all the stakeholders. After 30 years in corporate world, Shantanu made the shift to the social sector to contribute back to the society by helping catalyse development impact at scale in India. His stint in the corporate world with PwC, Unilever, GE and Genpact was split into two halves of being a financial leader in the first phase which culminated as CFO for GE, India and later as business leader. His last commercial role was that of leading global knowledge services businesses of USD 1.5 Bln for Genpact.
Karanraj is the Advisor – India/ South Asia, on SDG and Innovative Finance for the United Nations Development Programme. He focuses on supporting stakeholders developing blended finance solutions and forging strategic partnerships to direct investment capital in pursuit of improved social and developmental outcomes. At UNDP, Karanraj supports a number of country offices and initiatives including impact venture funds in Indonesia, affordable housing schemes in Bangladesh and early stage accelerators in Sri Lanka. He also leads the work for the SDG Finance Facility platform in India that works to further the sustainable and SDG finance agenda.
