On the International Day for Biological Diversity, Vedanta Group, a leading metals, oil & gas, critical minerals, power and technology conglomerate, reaffirmed its commitment to biodiversity conservation, ecological restoration and nature-positive growth across its operations. Since FY21, the Group has planted nearly 40 lakh trees, progressing steadily towards its target of 70 lakh trees by 2030. In FY26 alone, close to 10 lakh trees were planted across operational regions, supporting restoration and rejuvenation of mining landscapes, industrial land and native ecosystems

Aligned with the World Economic Forum’s 1 trillion trees (1t.org) global movement for ecological restoration, Vedanta’s plantation initiatives prioritise indigenous and native species suited to local ecosystems, including Neem, Peepal, Banyan, Arjun, Karanj, Bamboo, Jamun and lemongrass. Across its businesses, the Group is undertaking afforestation drives, reclaiming wasteyards into greenbelts, rehabilitating mined-out land and implementing Miyawaki plantations — a dense afforestation technique that recreates native forest ecosystems and accelerates biodiversity restoration.

Vedanta has also completed biodiversity screening across 100% of its 52 operational assets, establishing biodiversity baselines and strengthening its commitment towards achieving no net loss of biodiversity across operations.

Across businesses, several biodiversity initiatives are underway. Hindustan Zinc planted more than 1 lakh saplings during FY26 and is transforming 16 hectares of wasteland at Chanderiya Lead-Zinc Smelter into a flourishing greenbelt using Mycorrhiza technology in collaboration with TERI. The company has also developed Miyawaki forests across Debari, Dariba, Chanderiya and Kayad. Further strengthening its scientific approach to conservation, Hindustan Zinc is collaborating with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to develop site-specific Biodiversity Management Plans aligned with global conservation frameworks and its commitment towards No Net Loss of biodiversity.

Vedanta Aluminium BALCO has undertaken plantation of indigenous species across tailing dams and township areas to support ecological restoration, while Vedanta Aluminium Lanjigarh is restoring industrial land through plantation on non-active red mud storage areas. Vedanta FACOR, India’s leading ferrochrome producer has implemented phytoremediation initiatives by planting lemongrass along community river stretches to support soil restoration in mining regions. In Goa, Vedanta Iron & Steel has reclaimed over 200 hectares at Sanquelim Mines through award-winning agroforestry initiatives involving native and medicinal plant species.

Vedanta Aluminium’s Biodiversity Park in Jharsuguda, Odisha is home to over 30 butterfly species, while its Avian Arena Park in Lanjigarh provides safe nesting spaces and bird baths for avifauna. Vedanta Oil & Gas has developed 86 acres of man-made mangroves at Ravva, Andhra Pradesh, creating habitats for over 150 bird species, Smooth-Coated Otters and the endangered Fishing Cat. In Rajasthan, Vedanta Oil & Gas is also supporting habitat identification and awareness initiatives for the conservation of Spiny-Tailed Lizards.

Beyond ecological restoration, Vedanta continues to strengthen animal welfare and wildlife conservation through The Animal Care Organization (TACO), its flagship animal welfare initiative. TACO operates a 24x7 veterinary hospital, shelter and Animal Birth Control Centre (ABC) in Faridabad, Haryana, providing advanced veterinary care, diagnostics, mobile emergency services and rehabilitation support for abandoned and stray animals.

Under TACO’s wildlife conservation initiative, Mission VanRaksha, Vedanta is supporting conservation efforts across key wildlife habitats in India through strategic partnerships with Kaziranga National Park in Assam, Ranthambore Tiger Reserve and Ramgarh Vishdhari Tiger Reserve in Rajasthan. The initiative is strengthening anti-poaching infrastructure, surveillance systems, frontline mobility and habitat protection measures, including deployment of surveillance vehicles, anti-poaching camps and dwelling units for frontline forest personnel.

Vedanta has also contributed towards biodiversity awareness and conservation storytelling through projects such as Leopard Dynasty – The Rise of Rana, showcasing India’s wildlife heritage and conservation ecosystems, and is supporting Wild Rajasthan, a documentary project focused on the state’s diverse wildlife and ecosystems.
