Labour Welfare Dept and The Hans Foundation Sign MoU for Mobile Medical Units in Assam Tea Gardens

The Labour Welfare Department and The Hans Foundation have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to launch the Hans Mobile Medical Unit Project in 120 most vulnerable tea gardens of Tinsukia and Dibrugarh districts of Assam. The signing ceremony, held at the Minister's Conference Hall, was attended by Hon'ble Minister for Tea Tribe and Labour Welfare, Shri Sanjoy Kishan.

The event began with an introduction to The Hans Foundation's initiatives, particularly in the North East. Shri Sanjoy Kishan highlighted the project's importance, stating, "This partnership will bring essential various services directly to tea garden workers, improving their health and overall well-being."

Senior officers from the Labour Welfare Department present at the event included Hon'ble Principal Secretary to the Government of Assam, Dr. B. Kalyan Chakravarthy, IAS; Shri Abhijit Baruah, ACS, Secretary, Labour Welfare Department; Ms. Anamika Tiwari, ACS, Labour Commissioner; and Mr. Kanpai Das, Chief Inspector of Plantation, Assam, Labour Welfare Department.

Senior representatives from The Hans Foundation included Mr. Vijay Jamwal, Senior Program Director and Mr. Krishna, Regional Senior Manager, North East Regional Office.

The Hans Mobile Medical Unit Project will deploy 24 medical vans equipped with healthcare professionals to provide regular check-ups, treatments, and preventive care to tea garden workers and their families in the Tinsukia and Dibrugarh districts. This initiative aims to enhance healthcare access and outcomes in the region, initially covering 120 tea gardens, 60 in each district. The Mobile Medical Units will offer a comprehensive package of services including OPD consultations, free medicines, diagnostic tests, counselling, and awareness sessions. Additionally, home visits for the elderly and persons with disabilities, as well as referrals to tertiary care centres for critical patients, will be part of the services provided.

Under the MoU, THF will bear the project implementation costs and provide free healthcare services to the beneficiaries. The Labour Welfare Department and the district administrations will support THF by providing regular administrative assistance. This initiative not only aims to improve healthcare access but also addresses the broader health disparities in vulnerable populations residing in remote tea garden areas.
