Nestlé India Reinforces Commitment to a Waste-Free Future on World Environment Day

On World Environment Day, Nestlé India reaffirmed its commitment to reducing plastic waste through responsible packaging, plastic collection and processing, and community-led waste management initiatives. The Company also reiterated its focus on strengthening circular economy solutions and advancing responsible waste management practices across the country.

Kunwar Himmat Singh, Head, Corporate Affairs, Sustainability and CSR, Nestlé India, said, “Addressing plastic waste requires action at every stage – from how we design our packaging to how it is collected and managed after use. We are proud of the progress we have made, but we know there is more to do, and we remain committed to being part of the solution.”

Nestlé India believes that packaging should not end up in the environment. The Company collects and processes an amount of plastic packaging equivalent to what it introduces into the market. In FY 2025-26, this translated into the responsible management of approximately 25,000 metric tonnes of plastic packaging through recycling and other approved recovery solutions. The Company has remained plastic neutral since 2020 and continues to strengthen systems for responsible plastic waste management.

Reducing plastic starts with using less of it. Nestlé India continues to redesign its packaging to use fewer materials and more recycled content. From coffee sachets that use lesser plastic, the continued use of thermoformed cups for MAGGI Cuppa, to increased use of recycled plastic across coffee, ketchup, chocolates, and confectionery packaging, every improvement helps reduce the need for virgin plastic.

Nestlé India is working with communities to address waste management challenges through Project Hilldaari, implemented in partnership with Plan Foundation. The initiative currently spans 10 tourist destinations across India, including the recently added locations of Shimla and Theog. During FY 2025-26, Project Hilldaari engaged over 130,000 households to promote source segregation, achieving 78% segregation across project locations and diverting more than 13,000 metric tonnes of waste from landfills. The project also conducted more than 250 training sessions for over 1,500 waste workers, supporting safer working practices and strengthening local waste management systems.

Through these efforts, Nestlé India continues to collaborate with partners, communities, and local administrations to help build cleaner, more sustainable environments and advance responsible waste management across the country.
