The neighborhood waste management project was designed with an aim to set up sustainable, holistic, and decentralized waste management solutions. The vision was to maximize recycling, ensure citizens segregate at source and carry out in situ composting. The dry waste to be handed over to responsible recyclers and trash generation to be reduced over the course of time with eco-education. BYN88 a local community, Godrej Properties limited and RUR GreneLife came together to draw a road map and involved 500 families in the project. They have diverted over 60 tonnes of waste into recycling and generated 10 livelihoods through the project. Many families have adopted window grill gardening and some have started community vegetable and fruit gardens, where the produce is given to the housekeeping staff who maintains the composting project sites.
The project worked on a theme of knowledge comes first. Waste Survey followed by At Source Segregation awareness workshop followed up by setting up community bins for dry waste recycling and RURs GreenGold Aerobic Biocomposter setting up and hand-holding with the staff to take care of the wet waste in a sustainable and decentralized way!. This whole idea culminated with a customized process with interval checks by the operations of RUR in between to ensure adherence to SOPs and maintaining the efficiency!
