Objective:
The Livelihood Project aims to increase the socio-economic profile of underprivileged youth across Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Karnataka & Telangana by providing training in vocational skills through delivery formats such as Livelihood Development Centres & Rural Livelihood Development Centres /Village Camps model and thereafter linking the trained youth to livelihood opportunities.
Project Summary:
Industry research foresees human resources as India’s most significant global advantage in the coming years, with 800 million persons below the age of 35, and 25% of the world’s total workforce estimated to be in India, by 2025. However, this Demographic Dividend threatens to turn into a DEMOGRAPHIC DISASTER because of the lack of employability of this workforce due to lack of relevant skills. If left unskilled, the unemployed, underprivileged youth will go astray and get into unproductive activities or take to antisocial means like terrorism, crime, theft, etc.
Impact of the Yuva Parivartan interventions:
52% of beneficiaries are primary wage earners
Kherwadi Social Welfare Association, through its flagship programme Yuva Parivartan (YP), is trying to tackle this shortage of skilled labor, and help youth find livelihoods, by imparting relevant skills to the underprivileged youth through short term vocational training programmes. The YP programme is a comprehensive programme. It not only focuses on training the youth but on ensuring that the participant starts earning an income through self or wage employment. It is often difficult for disadvantaged youth from the rural and semi-rural areas to travel even short distances to reach training centers. The training itself includes, in addition to the technical skills needed for the trade, a unique module for attitude change called “Soch ka Parivartan”, as well as a large practical component that builds confidence. Local level livelihood linkages, ensure sustained income generation. Also, our students are often ones that most other programmes do not reach, as we train youth educated till the fifth & sixth grades. The programme is a practical & cost-effective way for youth to gain skills to become employable and earn a livelihood and thus contribute to the National Economy.
