Project Description

This set of programs is focused on helping 35 to 65-year-old women from underprivileged communities become socially and financially self-reliant and generate income as individuals or group entrepreneurs.

  • Women Entrepreneurs Program: Creating awareness about generating income through self-owned and managed enterprises among house-bound, frequently illiterate/semi literate women, motivating them to earn without relying on exploitative middle-men, helping them to come together as a group of co-owners to decide on a business for which they have some prior experience, skills or knowledge, training them in basic life skills, and relevant technical skills, and setting up production or retail enterprise are the initial steps in this program. Exposure visits, confidence building, market awareness, customer handling, quality control, accounting, negotiating skills, and continuous hand holding and mentoring are essential processes for helping build sustainable enterprises.
  • This program is currently operating in two slum communities in Delhi and one village in Haryana. 193 women are gainfully engaged through 49 enterprises they own and manage.
  • Adult Literacy Program: The objective is to provide the basic level of empowerment with the ability to sign their names, read sign boards, newspapers and keep simple household accounts. CBFL Software developed by TCS is used to engage the audience and provide basic numeracy skills like counting, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division and language skills like writing their names and reading basic Hindi words.
  • SHG Formation: Another level of empowerment for women is focused on inculcating the saving habit, experiencing the power of collective working as a support group for meeting urgent financial needs of group members, becoming financially literate, keeping accounts, and carrying out banking transactions. The intervention covers creating awareness, mobilizing women into groups, helping them develop operating norms, supporting in operations, and encouraging them to become entrepreneurs.
