As the record of training and placement for youth became visible to the communities, the demand from older women for income generation grew. Following are the initiatives taken by ETASHA to cater to their demands:
Women Entrepreneurship Program - Responding to the growing demand, they designed the Women Entrepreneurship Program. The intervention began in Mangolpuri a large slum resettlement colony in North West Delhi and was soon initiated in Janouli, a village in Palwal District in Haryana and the program works with women between the ages of 25 and 65 years, keen on becoming financially self-reliant. The Groups of women inclined to work together as entrepreneurs are provided training in Life Skills, Trade-specific skills as well as Enterprise Management skills and helped to set up and successfully run enterprises. The Project in Mangolpuri currently supports women’s enterprises that manufacture and sell LED Bulbs, Garments, Hygienic Masks, Handmade Soaps, Liquid Hand and Face Wash, Candles, and Spices, Project Protsahan in Janouli supports 2 projects producing and selling Savouries (Namkeens), and Incense (Agarbattis).
Adult Literacy Program - With the literacy levels among women in Janouli being particularly low, the need was felt to provide the basic level of empowerment with the ability to sign their names, read sign boards, newspapers and keep simple house hold accounts. CBFL Software developed by TCS, is used to engage the audience and provide basic numeracy skills like counting, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and language skills like writing their names and reading basic Hindi words. Usage of laptops to teach helps create comfort, excitement and experience of working with technology
SHG Formation - Another level of empowerment for women is focused on inculcating the saving habit, experiencing the power of collective working and having a support group. This process was initiated recently in Janouli. 91 women are currently active in 8 SHGs. The training of SHG members in keeping accounts, carrying out banking transactions and financial literacy is ongoing. The desire for income generation and entrepreneurship is being kindled and they are being encouraged to set up income generation activities.
