Menstrual hygiene is a topic that’s often left out of conversations, yet it’s one that’s essential. Unfortunately, girls and even many women still don’t know how to properly care for their periods, which can lead to serious health complications.
“Project Swabhiman” is aimed to raise awareness about menstrual hygiene and its importance in the rural as well as urban parts of the country. Poor menstrual hygiene is an embarrassing and often uncomfortable problem that affects many women of reproductive age. According to the World Health Organization, about 50% of women worldwide lack basic menstrual hygiene skills such as proper food and nutrion at growing age , washing their hands and internal body parts regularly and using proper sanitary pads or tampons.
Tresna Foundations initiative Project Swabhiman aims to do just that by teaching girl students and women in rural India about the importance of good menstrual hygiene. The project started in 2021 and has so far reached over 14,000+ girl students across 248 villages/clusters of Tarapur, Khambhat, Sojitra, Petlad, Borsad and Umreth Talukas of Anand & Kheda District.
The success of Project Swabhiman hinges on two main factors: first, making sure that our girls understand why good menstrual hygiene is important; second, getting them involved in taking measures to improve their own toiletary habits. To achieve these goals, our project team work with village chiefs, teachers as well as villagers to distribute materials, hold discussions and conduct Health checkup drives.
So far, the project has been very successful in helping people from villages and urban areas improve their menstrual hygiene skills. And since Project Swabhiman is focused on teaching girl students about good menstrual hygiene habits, the program is also likely to reduce drop-out of girl student ratio.
To ascertain we reach the maximum audience from far-fetched areas as well, we regularly conduct medical and awareness camps. These camps help us know and understand the current medical condition of the villagers and also doubles up as imparting education that helps them mitigate the issues before they arise. Our team of experienced gynecologists helps them understand the impact of poor menstrual hygiene and its consequences.
So far, we have conducted a hygiene drive for more than 7 villages, covering almost 1200+ people from rural and urban parts of Anand & Nadiad. We have also distributed sanitary pads in almost all the drives we have conducted. We have also been providing training to people on how to maintain hygiene and sanitation in their homes. We are extremely grateful for the support of our donors, who have made all of this possible. Without their generous donations, we would not be able to continue with the same zeal and passion.
