JKASW in partnership with CRY has been successfully implementing a child centric programme with special focus on Out of school children & Early Childhood Care & Education in sixteen Panchayats of District Baramulla (5) and District Bandipora (11) covering approximately 68 far flung habitations. JKASW through this intervention is reaching upto 5743 households in these target areas, comprising total population of 37905 individuals that includes adult population of 24448 and child population of 13457. The child population further consists of 6666 male and 6791 female children.
The majority of households in these areas are daily wage workers, small and marginal farmers and artisans that have meagre resources like land holding, secure employment opportunities or income generation. This is the reason that about 10% of children in the age category of 6- 18 years are in different forms of labour like carpet weaving, shawl weaving and embroidery, cattle raising, chest nut collection and fishing, sand dredging and construction labour. It is also interesting to note that about 65% of these children in any form of labour comprise of girl children. The involvement of children into labour to support their families results in dropout of children from schools, especially from class 5th onwards. Due to ignorance in the families there is also a trend in these communities of non- enrolment of children in schools which implies many children never attend any schools.
In the age category of 6-9 years 192 children (M: 91, F: 101) f were mainstreamed into schools.
In the age category of 9-14 years 125 children (M: 60, F: 56) were mainstreamed.
In the age group of 14-18 years, 37 children (M:16, F: 21) were mainstreamed.
Remedial classes provided for 367 (M: 167, F: 200) children during the time when schools were closed due to the political disturbances in the valley.
The ECCE component is running effectively and caters to 605 children (324 males/381 females) in 22 ICDS centres.
The SLC has impacted 482 children (M: 214, F: 238). These children have improved on their learning levels as the final assessment results have shown. The retention of these children is confirmed and the vulnerability of dropping out from schools have been checked.
There are 17 Child Parliaments functional with a membership of 566 children (M: 242 males, F: 326). 24448 community members including parents were given orientation child issues and rights through these Child Parliaments only.
