Project Description

ATREE collaborated with Rainforest Alliance on this project to facilitate organic coffee nurseries, understand shade management and management of disease and control. The project also looked into the importance of rainforest alliance certification for the coffee product for competitive marketing. Webinars were conducted among coffee farmers to build awareness regarding health and nutrition as well as benefits from farming native organic coffee and the management of shade trees in their plantations. Important topics on rust disease and control were also discussed at the webinar to raise awareness on sustainable coffee farming and certification which will lead to enhancement of livelihoods.

Special Features of Project

  • The facilitated sale of 60,000 to 70,000 kg coffee beans per year
  • The project is promoting the development of an organic coffee brand for the BRT grown coffee
  • Branding and marketing training was provided to the farmers and led to the development of the ADAVI coffee brand.
  • Two coffee nurseries have been set up
  • Local shops and Mysore Zoo outlet selling the product apart from ATREE itself. The income generated from ATREE will be sent back to the community
  • As many as 450 farmers have been provided training on standard organic coffee production practices
  • A coffee bean processing unit has been set up and supported.
  • Coffee quality is being monitored and has been found to be fairly good.
  • The farmers shall be supported for at least another two years for helping them secure organic certification and Rainforest Alliance Certification.
  • Biodiversity is being monitored and shady fruit trees are planted for additional income.
