The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has emerged in recent weeks as one of the largest threats to global public health seen in generations. As of 11 August,2020, more than 20 million cases have been confirmed globally , and the epidemic is growing daily at an alarming rate. 52% of the 164 countries reporting cases are low- or middle-income, and even strong health systems are likely to be rapidly overwhelmed by the growing number of cases. In India, more than 2.2 million confirmed cases have been reported so far with a rapid increase in the number of new cases in the last months. This strongly signals the urgent need for capacity building of the Indian health system to respond to the crisis in the upcoming weeks.
SARS-CoV-2 outbreak has highlighted the huge gaps in ability to test and manage wide-spread pandemics globally and in India.
