Bridging Covid-induced learning gaps for rural students using iPrep tablets

Organization : iDream Education

Location : Maharashtra,Karnataka,Madhya Pradesh

Project Description

Covid-induced lockdown led to a significant digital divide among government school students, where most of them did not have a device of their own, and those who did could not get access to it during school time. And with the internet also being a challenge, many students could not attend online classes and eventually were cut off from all learning activities. The situation was common among students of almost all government schools across India.

To bridge this learning gap, CIPLA Foundation collaborated with iDream Education to give iPrep Tablets to students of 55  government schools in Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Madhya Pradesh. Each iPrep tablet was given with SD Card preloaded with curriculum-aligned digital content in Marathi, Kannada, Hindi and English medium. Additionally, we ensured that students of class 10th have access to the content of class 9th to help them cope with the learning gap without any delay.

Thus, personalised tablets with multiple category digital content students preferred resulted in

  • Increase in their average learning time at home
  • Improved understanding of concepts from juniors grades
  • Continuous monitoring of learning in progress

Reach of the implementation:

  • State Covered: Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Madhya Pradesh
  • Number of Schools reached: 55
  • Number of students impacted: 6,000+

Project Type : CSR

Special Features of Project

  • Each student had access to their individual tablet, which enabled them to learn at their own pace and from anywhere they felt comfortable.
  • Availability of offline digital content, given preloaded on SD cards, reduced dependency on the internet and the need to find a place with better internet connectivity.
  • Access to the content of junior class empowered students to switch to the content of the class 9th and cope with the learning gap that occurred due to covid induced lockdown.
  • All 7-inch Android tablets were given with earphones so that students could learn anywhere in a non-judgmental way. Further, each tablet has a book-style protective cover for hassle-free usage by students and their siblings at home.
  • Multiple-category curriculum digital content in Marathi, Kannada and Hindi, along with English, led to the proactive involvement of students in learning. And the availability of storybooks, poems, and other life skills content resulted in the involvement of parents in students’ learning, where they used to share moments of joy by retelling what was being learned.
  • Lastly, the continuous monitoring of student-wise usage on each tablet helped teachers to keep track of students' involvement in particular subjects and their progress, resulting in personalized guidance even when students were learning from home.
