SPARSH (Sastur Project of Action Research Services through Hospital), a public-private partnership initiative is a flagship project of The PRIDE India set up in 1996 post-Latur earthquake to provide quality primary healthcare to rural poor from Osmanabad and Latur districts in the Marathawada region of Maharashtra State. Osmanabad, together with its adjoining Latur district, has 30% of Maharashtra’s Below Poverty Line families and is one of the 100 poorest districts in India (as per Niti Ayog). There is a lack of adequate health services in the villages of the district, as only 11-12% of villages are close to the Primary Health Centers (PHC). Moreover, there are also gaps in terms of services like timely availability of doctors, drugs, adequate infrastructure, etc. in the government health facilities.
The SPARSH Rural hospital is located in a remote village where access to healthcare services is a major problem for the villagers. Approximately 215 villages in Osmanabad District, 75 villages in Latur District, 20 villages in Solapur District, and 25 villages in Gulbarga District access the health services from this hospital. The hospital sees a high influx of patients every day with more than 85,000 patients who benefit from the primary & secondary health services every year.
