There are thousands if not millions of stray cats in Mumbai with insufficient resources available for their survival. The scale of this overpopulation crisis is such that improvement of the welfare of these animals can only be achieved by a systematic and multi-faceted approach.
We recently conducted a survey of stray cats in a nearby underprivileged community, which revealed that there are roughly 1000+ cats in the area that are unsterilized, i.e., reproducing and producing many kittens every year. The cats are in extremely poor health as they have no access to food other than open garbage dumps in the area where they also contract terrible diseases. For these cats, and even more in similarly populated areas, mass sterilization/Animal Birth Control of healthy cats along with medical intervention for ill and injured cats and kittens is the only effective, feasible and long-term solution. We hope that the success of this project will open doors for future such projects all over Mumbai. We are looking for like-minded organizations or agencies to partner with us for the same, so we can widen our impact and save even more lives.
A post-completion survey will reveal the impact of high-volume, localized Animal Birth Control operations on stray animal populations.
