Garo Hills have lost 94,195 hectares of forests in 15 years with 7-8% of forest area controlled by Forest Department; rest is owned by local communities under the jurisdiction of Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC). The Garo Green Spine of which this corridor is a part, forms the backbone of biodiversity of the region connecting Nokrek NP to Baghmara RF (BRF) through Balpakram NP (BNP), affected due to jhum cultivation, expanding settlements, plantations, mining and increased HEC (4 human,5 elephant deaths). This corridor is vital in maintaining continuity of about 600 sq km of elephant habitat between BNP and BRF leading to Nokrek NP through two corridors secured by WTI.
The Balpakram NP-Baghmara landscape, part of Garo Hills Elephant Reserve and Indo-Myanmar ecological hotspot is a repository of rich biodiversity, few endemic to the area. Aim is to connect the islands of forests by notifying corridor forests as Village Reserve Forests (VRFs) for unhindered wildlife movement by the empowered communities.
To secure the Baghmara-Balpakram Elephant corridor and protect the wildlife habitats of Garo Hills, Meghalaya. Increasing conserved area in Garo Green Spine by 1000 hectares and protection, management and monitoring of the notified Village Reserve Forests; Strengthening the livelihood and lifestyle of beneficiary families by 25% through skill development, eco- development and community support. Restoring 150 hectares of degraded habitats in corridor forests with 1,50,000 standing trees. Assessing and documenting biodiversity of the corridor village forests and implementing measures to strengthen Human Elephant Coexistence and Sensitizing at least 25,000 people on importance of natural and traditional heritage of Garo Hills for conservation.
Over last 15 years, WTI, Forest Department, GHADC and local communities have notified 2822.3 hectares of land for conservation as 17 VRFs-securing two important elephant corridors and restoration of 200 hectares in Garo Hills. The community has strongly owned the conservation efforts, and together with local government, have come forward to secure safe passage for wildlife. The reverberation of efforts has earned the confidence of people and had an optimistic influence bringing community conservation to a whole new dimension. The project is vital in bringing ecological justice countering anthropogenic pressure and creating win-win situation for both wildlife and humans.
