Of all the health problems in India, heart disease is among the deadliest. Around 55 million people in India have some form of cardiovascular diseases due to stress, tension, improper eating habits and sedentary lifestyle. Many families have been affected emotionally and financially when the primary income earner is affected with heart disease. Numerous patients in and around their geographical area come to them with heart problems such as blockages in their heart vessels. Angioplasty is the preferred method to treat blockages. This procedure requires an equipment called Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS) to ensure effectiveness of the same. Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS) is a catheter-based diagnostic procedure used to see the coronary artery from the inside-out to get a dynamic picture of the blood flow to decide on the plaque and treatment.

• This test uses sound waves to see the inside of the blood vessels for evaluating blockages in the coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart. The sound waves reflect off blood vessels, and changes the sound waves into pictures. A tiny ultrasound wand is attached to the top of a thin tube. This tube is called a catheter. The catheter is inserted into an artery in the groin area and moved up to the heart.
• IVUS images show the artery walls and can reveal cholesterol and fat deposits (plaques). Build-up of these deposits can increase the risk of a heart attack.
• IVUS has also helped doctors understand how stents become clogged. This is called stent restenosis.
