Organization : Learning Curve Life Skills Foundation

Location : Telangana

Project Description

Social-emotional skills can be particularly crucial for children from low-income backgrounds and can be a key resource for their upliftment. In the context of Telangana, girl children enrolled in KGBV schools can specially benefit from these skills, and become emotionally healthy, socially independent and responsible citizens - thus enabling them to lead meaningful lives as they transition into adulthood. The project focuses on going beyond academics - to competencies that will enable girls (and boys) to find their voice, become resilient and break the cycle of inequity. The program ‘acSELerate’ aims to strengthen the self, build strong relationships and build a strong community by:

  • Empowering teachers through self-development
  • Enabling teachers to bring SEL into the classroom with curriculum, toolkits, and learning materials
  • Engaging with administrators to bring process, practice, and SEL vocabulary into schools
  • Engaging with parents to bring SEL into their home and community
  • Each component of the program has structured inputs, a support system, and an assessment framework.

The integration of the program components leads to the following outcomes for the student:

  • Students are participative and engaged in classrooms, leading to better learning
  • Students show enhanced self-regulation, critical thinking, and decision making
  • Students become collaborative and adaptable
  • Students are socially conscious and behave responsibly outside the school

These goals and outcomes are directly aligned with SDG 4.7.1. The extent to which (i) global citizenship education and (ii) education for sustainable development, including gender equality and human rights, are mainstreamed at all levels in:

  • National education policies
  • Curricula,
  • Teacher education and
  • Student assessment.
