Fast urbanization and mass migration in search of better living are consistently contributing to the expansion of slum areas in Kolkata and Bidhannagar metropolitan cities. The overpopulated slum areas are mostly unhygienic. Due to a lack of access to basic amenities most of the slum people in these two cities fall prey to the risks of vulnerable health conditions. In the health scenario Govt. Health Facilities are available that seem to be inadequate to meet the needs of the huge population of slums in both Bidhannagar and Kolkata.
For the last four decades Sabuj Sangha’ has been active in ensuring the basic rights of marginalized communities. It has the mission to ascertain sustainable development of marginalized and vulnerable people and improved quality of life through empowerment, education, information, infrastructure development, healthcare provision, and economic self-reliance through the convergence of services provided by local self-governments.
To improve the overall health status of people living in urban slums, Sabuj Sangha in active support of Wipro Cares initiated the Healthcare Programme for Urban Poor titled ‘Niramoy’ in identified slums of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Rajpur Sonarpur Municipal Corporation. Through this program, Sabuj Sangha started providing basic healthcare services to marginalized people. The primary focus of this project is to provide high-quality and affordable healthcare services. For the project to be successful, we do not provide all the services free of cost but instead, are offered at subsidized rates that make them accessible to local communities.
