Skill Based Education In Rural Communities

Mitra Technology Foundation (iVolunteer)

Program Description

As per the latest statistics, two-thirds of our skill pool is not fit to sustain a job. In India almost 30 million youth complete graduation & only 20% are employable and rest are quite capable of being employable except for want of basic skills which the mainstream education doesn’t cover. There is a gap between the education students receives and the needs and expectations of the industry, resulting in a decreased number of employable candidates. Employment Training for rural children aims to prepare poor students to get ready for a career in different Sectors.

Empowerment & Skill development of a rural poor student will end the poverty cycle of the whole family. When we invest in a Young, economically challenged meritorious child, we can break the poverty cycle of a family forever. The rural students don’t get opportunity to learn skills that are necessary to succeed in any industry – such as problem solving, critical reasoning, and teamwork. As they study in vernacular medium till graduation, they do not have the English language skills that are necessary to gain jobs in either the Private sector or the Public sector. In short, there is a wide gap between the education that students receive and the needs and expectations of industry, resulting in unemployment or underemployment.

Aim:  The aim of this program is

  • To address the gap between skills given by formal education and industry expectations.
  • To provide mentoring and required Life Skills & Job skills and make them Industry ready.
  • To assist students set and achieve desired career goals.

Purpose of the Project: To Provide employability skill training for unemployed economically challenged children and enable hundreds of unemployed girls from poor families to take up employment in entry level jobs in Private & Public sector.

Target beneficiaries: Economically challenged unemployed girl students of rural villages of Maharashtra.

Process:

  1. Volunteers will reach out to 10 rural villages of Maharashtra, establish connection and identify 500+ economically challenged unemployed graduates.
  2. Conduct one to one counseling to know their career aspirations and their family background.
  3. Shortlist the students based on the economic need and the merit of the student and inform about the guidelines for the training which will result in them being ready to start their career.
  4. Select 100 students initially for training out of which 50% youths would be able to successfully complete the training program and start their career in either private sector or public sector within six months of completion of their training.
