Recognising the need to improve access to specialised cancer treatment, HDFC Asset Management Company (HDFC AMC) supported the establishment of a Radiotherapy Unit in the new Oncology Block at Ramakrishna Charitable Hospital, Vrindavan, through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative. 

The initiative aims to strengthen oncology infrastructure and bring advanced cancer care closer to communities across North India, enabling more patients to receive timely and effective treatment.

Addressing the Growing Need for Advanced Cancer Treatment

Cancer treatment typically requires a combination of medical interventions that may include surgery, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, hormone therapy, and radiotherapy. Among these, radiotherapy plays a critical role in treating many forms of cancer. It is used either as a primary treatment or alongside other therapies to improve treatment outcomes.

However, access to advanced radiotherapy facilities remains limited in many parts of India. High-quality radiotherapy systems require significant investment in equipment, infrastructure, and specialised expertise. As a result, many healthcare institutions struggle to provide these services, particularly in regions outside major urban centres.

Patients who require radiation therapy often have to travel long distances to access treatment, sometimes multiple times over several weeks. This can create logistical difficulties and increase treatment costs, making care less accessible for economically vulnerable populations.

To help bridge this gap, HDFC AMC supported the procurement and installation of advanced radiotherapy equipment at Ramakrishna Charitable Hospital. The newly established Radiotherapy Unit enables the delivery of high-precision radiation therapy, allowing healthcare professionals to target cancerous cells more accurately while minimising damage to surrounding healthy tissues.

This capability enhances the quality of treatment available at the hospital and expands access to specialised oncology services for patients who may otherwise struggle to obtain advanced care.

Strengthening Oncology Infrastructure Through a Dedicated Cancer Care Facility

The Radiotherapy Unit forms part of a larger expansion of cancer care services through the development of a new Oncology Block at Ramakrishna Charitable Hospital. The facility has been designed to provide comprehensive cancer treatment and support services under one roof, creating an integrated care environment for patients and healthcare professionals.

Modern cancer treatment requires more than individual medical interventions. Effective care depends on coordinated diagnosis, treatment planning, therapy administration, monitoring, and patient support. The new Oncology Block has been developed with this integrated approach in mind.

The facility includes two radiotherapy bunkers, a brachytherapy bunker, and a CT simulator, all of which are essential components of contemporary radiation oncology services. The inclusion of these specialised facilities enables clinicians to conduct detailed treatment planning and deliver targeted therapies based on individual patient requirements.

In addition to treatment infrastructure, the Oncology Block houses outpatient consultation rooms, a day-care unit, tumour board facilities, nurses' stations, conference rooms, and allied support infrastructure. Together, these resources create a comprehensive environment that supports the entire cancer treatment journey, from diagnosis through recovery and follow-up care.

The expansion significantly increases the hospital's capacity to serve a growing patient population and strengthens its role as an important regional centre for cancer treatment.

Serving Patients Across North India

Ramakrishna Charitable Hospital has steadily expanded its healthcare services over the years to address the needs of underserved communities. Since establishing its Oncology Department in 2017, the hospital has emerged as a key provider of cancer treatment for patients across North India.

The hospital serves individuals from a wide geographical area extending approximately 400 kilometres from Vrindavan. Patients from Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Rajasthan, and neighbouring regions regularly seek treatment at the facility, making it an important healthcare destination for specialised oncology services.

Over the years, the Oncology Department has developed expertise in delivering a broad range of cancer treatments and procedures. These include complex surgeries such as commando surgeries, reconstructive surgeries, Whipple procedures, free flap procedures, and wide excisions. 

The department also provides chemotherapy, immunotherapy, hormone therapy, and other treatment modalities that are essential for comprehensive cancer management.

The addition of advanced radiotherapy capabilities further strengthens the hospital's ability to provide end-to-end cancer care. Patients can now access more treatment options within the same institution, reducing the need for referrals to distant facilities and improving continuity of care.

For many individuals and families, having access to specialised treatment closer to home can make a substantial difference in both treatment experience and outcomes.

Promoting Affordable and Inclusive Healthcare

Ramakrishna Charitable Hospital has consistently worked to address this challenge by providing accessible and affordable healthcare services. Since the inception of its Oncology Department, the hospital has delivered care to more than 45,000 outpatients and over 12,000 inpatients.

Importantly, the institution also provides free treatment to destitute patients requiring critical medical support. This commitment helps ensure that financial limitations do not become a barrier to receiving potentially life-saving care.

The establishment of the Radiotherapy Unit supports these efforts by expanding access to advanced treatment technologies within a charitable healthcare setting. Patients who might otherwise face difficulties accessing specialised radiotherapy services can now benefit from treatment closer to their communities and within a more affordable care ecosystem.
