How Avaada’s CSR Program Is Enabling Safe School Access for Children in Madhya Pradesh

Across many tribal and rural regions of India, education is often disrupted not by a lack of schools, but by the everyday challenge of reaching them. Long distances between villages and educational institutions, unsafe travel routes, and the absence of dependable public transport create significant barriers for students.

These challenges are especially pronounced for children from remote tribal communities and for girls, whose education is frequently compromised due to safety concerns and social constraints. As a result, irregular attendance and school dropouts remain persistent issues, limiting long-term learning outcomes and social mobility.

Recognising transportation as a critical yet often overlooked link in the education ecosystem, the Avaada Group identified the need for improved school mobility in rural Madhya Pradesh, with Avaada Foundation implementing a focused intervention by donating school buses to local schools, helping bridge the gap between home and classroom.

Addressing Transportation Barriers in Tribal and Rural Communities

In districts such as Raisen and Bankhedi in the Narmadapuram region of Madhya Pradesh, students often travel several kilometres each day to attend school. For many families, daily commuting involves walking long distances or relying on unsafe and unreliable modes of transport. Seasonal challenges such as extreme heat, monsoon conditions, and poor road connectivity further complicate access to education, particularly for younger children.

Avaada Foundation’s donation of two 42-seater school buses directly responds to this ground reality. The buses were provided to Saraswati Vidya Mandir in Raisen and Saraswati Gramoday Higher Secondary School in Paliya Pipariya, Bankhedi, institutions that cater to students from multiple surrounding villages.

By introducing safe and regular transportation, the initiative reduces the physical and emotional burden associated with daily travel and ensures that students can attend school consistently.

This intervention goes beyond convenience. Reliable transport significantly lowers the risk of absenteeism caused by fatigue, illness, or safety concerns. It also ensures punctuality, allowing students to participate fully in academic activities and co-curricular programs. For schools, dependable transportation enables better planning, smoother operations, and stronger engagement with families from distant villages.

Advancing Girls’ Education Through Safe Mobility

One of the most profound impacts of inadequate school transportation is seen in girls’ education. In rural and tribal areas, families are often hesitant to send girls to school if travel routes are long or perceived as unsafe. As girls grow older, these concerns intensify, leading to higher dropout rates at the secondary level. The absence of secure transport thus becomes a decisive factor in limiting educational continuity for girls.

By providing dedicated school buses, Avaada Foundation’s initiative creates a safer and more reassuring environment for families. Structured pick-up and drop-off systems reduce exposure to unsafe travel conditions and alleviate parental concerns.

This sense of security plays a crucial role in encouraging regular attendance and sustained enrollment of girls, especially during critical transition phases such as moving from primary to secondary education.

Access to safe transportation also supports broader outcomes beyond attendance. When girls can travel comfortably and reliably, they are more likely to engage actively in school life, pursue higher education, and develop aspirations beyond their immediate surroundings. Over time, this contributes to improved gender equity in education and strengthens the social fabric of rural communities.

Strengthening Educational Infrastructure Through Targeted Support

The donation of school buses forms part of Avaada Foundation’s wider commitment to strengthening educational infrastructure in Madhya Pradesh. Rather than focusing solely on classroom-based interventions, the Foundation adopts a holistic perspective that recognises the interconnected factors influencing educational access and quality.

Previously, Avaada Foundation has supported schools in regions such as Dongla, Raisen, and Betul through similar transportation initiatives. These efforts reflect a consistent strategy of addressing foundational gaps that directly affect students’ ability to attend and remain in school.

By improving mobility, the Foundation ensures that investments in school buildings, teaching staff, and learning resources translate into real participation and outcomes.

The transportation initiative also reinforces collaboration with school authorities and local communities. Schools become better equipped to serve a wider catchment area, while families experience tangible improvements in access to education. This alignment between infrastructure support and community needs enhances the long-term sustainability of the intervention.

Impact Created

The donation of two 42-seater school buses has generated immediate and meaningful impact for students across Raisen and Bankhedi. Children from multiple tribal and rural villages now have access to safe, reliable, and regular transportation, significantly improving their ability to attend school daily. Reduced travel time and enhanced safety contribute to better attendance, lower dropout risks, and improved overall well-being.

The initiative has particular significance for girl students, for whom safe mobility often determines whether education can continue beyond the primary level. By addressing transportation-related barriers, the program supports gender-inclusive education and helps create conditions for long-term learning continuity.

At a community level, the intervention strengthens trust in educational institutions, as families see practical steps being taken to support their children’s safety and learning. Schools benefit from more consistent attendance and greater engagement, which in turn supports improved academic performance and participation in school activities.

Beyond immediate outcomes, the initiative highlights the importance of transportation as a core component of educational infrastructure. It demonstrates how targeted, practical support can unlock the potential of existing schools and create ripple effects across communities, contributing to broader social and educational development.

Way Forward

Building on the success of this initiative, Avaada Foundation plans to extend similar educational support to other regions facing comparable challenges. With plans to donate school buses in Uttarakhand, the Foundation aims to replicate its transportation-focused model in additional rural and hilly terrains where access to schools remains a concern.

Education remains a central pillar of the Foundation’s broader social development strategy. Alongside transportation initiatives, Avaada Foundation continues to invest in projects that promote learning, skill development, and community empowerment.

These include innovative educational infrastructure, such as the establishment of a planetarium on the Tropic of Cancer in Dongla, Ujjain, as well as women empowerment programs that provide skill training and livelihood opportunities.

By integrating education, mobility, and livelihood interventions, the Foundation adopts a comprehensive approach to inclusive development. Future efforts will continue to focus on removing structural barriers that prevent children and women from realizing their potential.

Through sustained commitment and targeted action, Avaada Foundation seeks to ensure that geography, safety, and infrastructure limitations do not stand in the way of education. By making the journey to school safer and more accessible, the Foundation is helping build a more equitable pathway to learning and long-term progress for rural and tribal communities in India.
