Chennai-Based Woman Truck Driver with Amazon Takes the Wheel of Change

This International Women’s Day, themed ‘Give to Gain’, Amazon India spotlights Bhuvaneshwari, a Chennai-based woman truck driver whose decision to pursue a career in commercial trucking, a profession where women continue to remain underrepresented, has enabled her to build financial stability for her family while supporting the movement of customer orders across Amazon’s operations network.

Her interest in driving began early, watching her father and uncle operate commercial vehicles. Inspired by the discipline and independence the profession offered, Bhuvaneshwari learned to drive at a young age and gradually built her confidence behind the wheel. Over the years, she explored diverse roles — performing as a stage singer, driving ambulances during emergency services, and later training learners at a driving school. These experiences strengthened both her technical expertise and resilience as a professional driver.

As her skills evolved, she transitioned into commercial driving, beginning with an 8-foot truck and steadily progressing to larger vehicles through experience and performance. However, income disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic brought financial uncertainty, prompting her to look for more stable, long-term opportunities.

In 2022, after learning about an opportunity through one of her former driving students, Bhuvaneshwari chose to take the plunge and joined Amazon India’s operations network in Chennai. Since then, she has grown into operating 20-foot commercial trucks across demanding intracity routes, helping enable the seamless movement of customer orders between Amazon facilities and delivery stations across the city.

Speaking about her journey, Bhuvaneshwari said, “Driving has interested me since childhood, but choosing it as a full-time profession changed my life. As a single mother, having stable work gives me confidence and peace of mind. Working with Amazon has given me consistent opportunities and the freedom to provide for my family independently. I enjoy being on the road and want to continue growing in this profession while encouraging more women to consider driving as a career.”

Today, at 34, Bhuvaneshwari manages demanding intracity routes across Chennai, completing multiple daily trips that help move customer orders between Amazon’s fulfillment facilities and delivery stations across the city — a critical part of the company’s middle mile network. Through opportunities available with Amazon’s trucking partners, this role has enabled her to access steady work and stable income after years of income uncertainty.

A single mother, Bhuvaneshwari balances demanding driving schedules while raising her young son and supporting her mother. Reliable earnings from trucking have allowed her to take greater financial responsibility at home, from managing everyday expenses to planning ahead for her child’s education and future.

For Bhuvaneshwari, driving today represents more than a profession; it is a source of confidence and self-reliance. Her journey highlights how access to sustained livelihood opportunities can enable greater economic independence while encouraging more women to consider careers in commercial driving and logistics.
