The Desai Epilepsy Centre, a state-of-the-art medical facility dedicated to epilepsy care, officially opened its doors on Saturday, November 29, 2025, in association with Dr N.D. Desai Faculty of Medical Science & Research and The International Institute for Epilepsy, Inc. (a non-profit corporation based in Florida, USA).

Guided by the vision of Shri Dharmsinh Desai, founder of APAR Industries Limited, the Desai Epilepsy Centre reflects APAR’s deep commitment to social causes and meaningful societal impact. APAR has contributed Rs. 5 crore towards the development of the Centre.

Vision and Mission

Epilepsy, a neurological disorder caused by brief disturbances in brain electrical activity, is commonly misunderstood and stigmatised, especially in rural areas where it is often mistaken for mental illness or attributed to supernatural causes. The Desai Epilepsy Centre aims to close this treatment and awareness gap by offering accessible, specialised medical care while educating the public to dispel myths and improve social acceptance.

The centre aims to close India's epilepsy treatment gap, where 70-90% of patients lack proper care amid limited access and few trained experts. Advanced diagnostics, treatments, and outreach programs seek to deliver seizure-free lives for patients.

Leadership

Dr. Utkarsh Patel, a Gold Medallist neurologist with over 12 years of epilepsy expertise, trained at P.D. Hinduja National Hospital, Mumbai, leads the medical team. He is renowned for his work in neuro-electrophysiological procedures and has presented research at the World Congress of Neurology. Dr. Paresh Patel, MD, FACS, MBA, has been a practicing urologist since 1984, specialising in kidney-liver transplants, complex surgeries, and patient care. He is internationally recognised, with numerous publications and presentations, further strengthening the centre’s clinical prowess.

Future Aspirations and Initiatives:

The centre aims to empower patients by delivering holistic care and bridging the treatment gap. In its first year, it plans to extend patient reach through camps and support groups in collaboration with NGOs, introduce emerging medical technologies, and launch ongoing educational programs including CME workshops for physicians and training for ASHA workers.

Together, Desai Epilepsy Centre and its partners envision a future where seizure-free living is recognised as a right and stigma surrounding epilepsy is eliminated from our society.
