Nand Ghar Strengthens Diet Diversity to Improve Child Nutrition
In a significant step towards improving the quality and diversity of nutrition provided to young children, Nand Ghar, the flagship social impact initiative of the Anil Agarwal Foundation, has successfully introduced a Fresh Fruit Initiative under its Mother's Food Preparation Programme. The program introduced fresh bananas as a weekly addition alongside government's hot cooked meals for over 2,000 children across 170 Nand Ghars in 14 districts. The initiative is aimed at advancing Nand Ghar's efforts to strengthen dietary diversity during the critical early years of childhood.
While government nutrition programmes have made significant progress in improving food security, ensuring that children receive a balanced and diverse diet remains equally important for healthy growth and development. By introducing fresh fruits into supplementary nutrition, Nand Ghar is enriching the nutritional value of meals while encouraging healthy eating habits from an early age.
Banana was selected for its high nutritional value, ease of distribution and strong acceptance among young children. Rich in energy, dietary fibre, potassium and essential vitamins, it supports healthy physical growth, cognitive development and overall well-being. The initiative aligns with the ICMR–National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) Dietary Guidelines, which recommend the inclusion of fruits as part of a balanced diet to improve overall nutritional adequacy.
Shashi Arora, CEO, Nand Ghar, said, "At the Anil Agarwal Foundation, we believe that addressing malnutrition requires not only ensuring access to food, but also improving the quality and diversity of children's diets. Dietary diversity plays a critical role in ensuring children receive the essential nutrients needed for healthy growth, development and better cognition. Through this initiative, we are complementing meals with fresh fruits that are nutritious, local, seasonal and widely accepted by children. The encouraging response from children, parents and Nand Ghar Didis demonstrates that simple, evidence-based interventions can significantly enhance the quality of nutrition delivered at the community level."
It demonstrated the operational feasibility of integrating fresh fruits into the Anganwadi nutrition ecosystem. Bananas require no cooking or specialised preparation, making them an efficient and scalable addition to supplementary nutrition. Procuring fruits locally further ensures freshness while supporting nearby farmers and strengthening rural livelihoods.
As Nand Ghar continues to transform Anganwadis into integrated centres for nutrition, early childhood education, primary healthcare and women empowerment, the Fresh Fruit Initiative reflects its commitment to adopting practical, scalable and evidence-based approaches that improve not only the quantity, but also the quality and diversity of nutrition available to children. By complementing government-provided supplementary nutrition with fresh whole foods, Nand Ghar is helping build healthier diets and stronger foundations for lifelong health and development.
