Proposed Project Description

The IIMPACT model is a ‘Learning Centre based model’ led by a single locally selected teacher( preferably a woman) and run in the space provided by the community to ensure primary education of around 30 girls for 5 to 6 years with an intention to help them mainstream in due course. The objective is to strengthen the primary level skills of the children and master the foundational levels for facilitating the higher grades, improving regularity alongside inculcating needed life skills, which will enable the child to join the mainstream education further.

PROJECT PURPOSE:

  • To provide quality primary education to around 150 out-of-school/ irregular school girls through these 5 Learning Centers, using the most innovative and attractive educational materials and methods;
  • Parent awareness and sensitization: To enlist the support and motivation of the parents so that no out-of-school girl is left behind;
  • Pedagogical intervention: To enhance the curriculum and develop more meaningful Teaching-Learning Materials to engage with rural marginalized girls’
  • To develop the capacity of the teachers and cultivate new teachers through especially designed training workshops;
  • To enable and empower the village community members to play an important role in the education of girls’

The current proposal is for the sponsorship of 100 Learning Centers with approximately 30 girls in each LC i.e 3000 (children) and 100 (teachers) as direct beneficiaries. The activities deployed for the delivery of successful GCEP are stated as follows:

  • Identification of areas and beneficiaries (Survey): This exercise is done by the implementing partner in order to determine the educational status of all girls in the said age group.
  • Community Meetings with parents, community, and formal schools (Community mobilization and organization) and reach-out: The community is onboarded through CMCs to ensure an enabling and facilitative environment around girls for continuance of their education.
  • Development of Curriculum: Given the specific needs of the children, the curriculum is tailored to the needs of the children in alignment with the national and state curriculums and also keeping in mind the state context.
  • Innovative education techniques (Pedagogy): Since the children coming to LCS come from a wider age range the multi-grade, multi-level teaching methods are deployed to ensure that each girl is taught at an appropriate level rather than going by the age of the girl. Focus is also placed on developing skills and competencies which empower girls in general alongside the furtherance of their education
  • Regular Assessments:  Regular assessment is embedded in the teaching-learning process. However, systematic assessments are also conducted every quarter to understand the learning of the children as well as the gaps in learning. Since all children, out of school and irregular have higher difficulty in managing their learning, these assessments help teachers identify the needs of the children and plan for improvement.
  • Training of teachers/instructors/supervisors (Training and capacity building): Over 90% of the teachers engaged with IIMPACT’s training are women. They are individuals mostly from the same village who understand the background of the children better. All the teachers are periodically trained by the IIMPACT team. The teachers besides being trained on the curriculum and pedagogy are also trained on the delivery skills that have seen many of them outgrow their inhibitions.
  • Enrolment in formal schooling (Mainstreaming): IIMPACT works closely with the neighborhood schools and the government system to ensure that the girls are able to get into the formal education system. Teachers are oriented, govt teachers are engaged in CMCs, and parents are encouraged to be part of SMCs to smoothen the process. This is important as the regular school system is to be sensitized towards the presence of girls and also from marginalized settings.
  • Follow-up support for higher education/ completion of school education: Alumna tracking is an important IIMPACT strategy. The purpose is to handhold girls’ in their further journey towards education and empowerment. This is also vital to support the continuance of their further education through enablement for fellowship/ scholarships under government programs and schemes and another such mechanism alongside engagement with them on several other key aspects of life and development of ‘agency’ of the girls’.
  • Strengthening stakeholder engagement: As part of the girl child education program Education support groups are formed at village levels. The purpose of these groups is to ensure that communities take ownership of Girl Child Education and support the smooth functioning of the Learning centers.
