Founder Late Shri Hashu Advani along with his 5 friends started Vivekanand Education Society as small school in a barrack with dedication and devotion of serving the Humanity with the importance of education. The organization since then was selflessly striving for the progress of the underprivileged community. For the organization ‘Education has always been the transmission of civilization and most powerful weapon to change the world’. VES through its school for over 50 years has helped nurture the students and has focused on critical and creative thinking with the aim of social transformation, inculcating both human and spiritual values in them. VES believes not only in academic excellence but also in the overall development of children.

Vivekanand Vidyalaya and Kanishtha Mahavidyalaya and English High Schools are managed by Vivekananda Education Society, Mumbai with Sindhi Linguistic Minority Status vide Government of Maharashtra GR has Educational campus spread across 5212 sq.mts located in Eastern suburban of Mumbai comprising of four independent Schools and Junior College. The schools are located in Kurla campus (east) with a strength of more than 6000 students studying in Hindi and semi-English medium and English medium from 1st to Xth and Junior college. These students come from lower socio-economic strata and almost 90% are first generation learners.The school is under the affluentbanner of Vivekanand Education Society, Chembur established in 1975 affiliated to the State Board and is a co-ed school.

The demography of the school area ranges from slum dwellers, lower middle class to middle class. Students enrolled in the schools are from the neighborhood's localities such as Thakker Bappa Colony, Vastalatai Nagar, Kasaiwada, Chunabatti, Tilak Nagar, Kamgar Nagar & Nehru Nagar, they are from disadvantaged backgrounds and more likely to leave school at early age. In this generation there is no improvement of the people with reference to living standards, social, and economic conditions. Many of the pupils who have enrolled in VES schools are from Thakker Bappa Colony wherein Shoe making is the main occupation. Also in the areas like Vastalatai Nagar, female members of the family are house maids and male members earn from daily wages. There are very serious literacy issues in these areas. Moreover, pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds leaving schools at an early age with limited career aspiration view schooling as merely a prelude to getting a manual job.

The Motto of the school is mainly to mold in the behavior character and personality of the needy under marginalized children with love & affection, providing holistic development in terms of knowledge, skill & wisdom to build their confidence, self-reliance as a global citizen.

VES students as first learners with limitations in education and economically disadvantaged backgrounds cannot afford to invest in training that would help them develop technology skills, improve interpersonal skills and gain professional exposure, which the new global economy demands. This impacts their ability to jumpstart careers in various sectors, find jobs, establish viable self-employment ventures, and stay employed and productive in a changing economy. There is a wide Gap between Skills and Education, a demand-supply gap for skilled resources for the current digital environment. Thus, VES requires intervention with corporate partners to address the needs of first generation learners coming from lower socio –economic strata, from underprivileged communities and those that have no access to quality education.
