About the organization

Kherwadi Social Welfare Association (KSWA), is an NGO founded in 1928. Its flagship movement - Yuva Parivartan (YP), was established in 1998 and was formally launched by the then President APJ Kalam in 2003.

YP’s mission is to provide a second chance to the deprived youth and to empower women, through sustainable livelihood opportunities based on technical, business, and life skill training programs, which lead to attitudinal change and income generation. We have a deep understanding and connect with the communities that we work in. Over the last 24 years, we have improved the employability of more than 1 Million deprived youth and women through our skilling courses and helped them earn a livelihood. Our course content, course structure, the flexibility of timings, focus on practical training and content delivery, and support for earning livelihoods are tailored to embark our students on their journey towards livelihood. The time to benefits is reduced due to short course durations- 15-90 days. Our network of field counselors, community leaders, trainers, and connections with local livelihood providers/ enablers, coupled with digital reach through social media and our e-learning app-Yuva Kaushal, enables us to mobilize students at scale and help them earn wage or self-employment.

Yuva Parivartan has identified four areas of work, which form the pillars of its unique model and methodology;

  • Community Engagement - to mobilize youth and prepare them to unleash their potential
  • Livelihood Training - including vocational skills, work readiness and life skills
  • Industry partnership - for creating industry relevant curriculum, industry exposure and
  • On- job training
  • Livelihood Support - to get them successfully aligned to the mainstream.

Special features of the organization

Sustainability at Yuva Parivartan is focused on three levels:

  • Student Sustainability: The programme provides students with training in technical vocational skills, largely of a practical nature, with exposure visits and guest lectures to give the students a taste of the realities that they will encounter once they start work. In addition, the students also participate in the Soch Ka Parivartan (Attitude Transformation) module that helps them overcome the challenges of the real world. Our students often come from underprivileged backgrounds and the modules along with financial literacy and entrepreneurship, help in reduced vulnerability - creates multiple earning members in a household, improved health- due to additional income to spend on food and medical needs, and the increased ability to withstand shocks. Counseling sessions are conducted on a regular basis while the students are still part of the training programme. Even after the completion of the training, students are encouraged to get in touch with the YP team. Helpline numbers are displayed at all the centers and training rooms.
  • Program Sustainability: Our delivery models have strong linkages and networks in the community and local businesses, enabling continuity. Over time, students come in by reference, and businesses hiring students from the programme approach the centers whenever there is a need. This, along with regular mobilizations ensure a steady stream of students at the center.“Yuva Mitras” or “Friends of YP” are created in communities, who then tap into their own networks to create awareness about the programme. A small fee collected from the students helps build sustainability by taking care of the basic running costs. Yuva Parivartan also identifies, trains and monitors “like-minded" community members/students/ local institutions (computer institute, wireman shops, beauty parlors, tailoring shops) to run the YP model of livelihood training, thus sustaining the center beyond donor’s support after 36- 48 months.
  • Creating an Ecosystem: YP believes in creating a complete ecosystem of livelihood-based training providers through their various delivery formats. Our Livelihood Development Centres are present in small towns/peri-urban locations and cater to youth living within a radius of 10 to 15 km. The Livelihood Development Centres are our Hubs and the territorial headquarters of the region. The Spoke Networks are the Community Centres & Rural Camps that are set up for organizing skilling programs within a radius of 50 - 100 km of the territorial headquarters. Beyond this radius, through identifying “like-minded Partners” we continue to run the YP model of livelihood training across the identified need-based geographies. This brings about a holistic approach to creating an effective ecosystem across talukas and districts.
