About the organization

Four Lions clubs around Alibag came together with the clear aim to provide quality and affordable eye care to visually impaired patients deprived of any facilities. Lions Health Foundation, Alibag was founded in January 2016 and an eye hospital was started in Chondhi near Alibag in Raigad district to clear the backlog of cataract surgeries in Raigad district. It expanded its services by conducting various camps throughout the district and starting vision centers at 6 different places. Over the years, the hospital was upgraded by adding the latest and state-of-the-art equipment and furnished with a fully equipped operation theater with AHU, phaco system, and other equipment. Recently, the hospital has been upgraded with retina, cornea, squint, and Oculoplasty departments to provide comprehensive eye care.
Through this network, the foundation has reached more than 63 thousand visually impaired patients in the work area. More than 10,000 spectacles are provided, 6732 cataract surgeries are performed, and out of which 4082 surgeries are free of cost. The hospital has started a vision center in Roha and has been serving people in that area since 2018. This has helped more than 10,000 patients in the area to get their eye problems treated near their vicinity. More than 1200 patients are operated on for cataracts and other eye diseases by the Roha vision center. With the addition of new cases and an increase in the backlog because of the pandemic, the target for the whole Raigad district has now increased to about 8000 surgeries in the span of 2 years. Global warming has a definite effect on human health. The progression of cataracts is much faster nowadays because of increased temperature and changes in the environment.

Why should a corporate partner with organization?
Raigad district is one of the similar districts all over India, where 72% population stays in a rural area, where people have to travel a long distance to avail even primary health care, eye care is almost out of their reach because of non-availability, non-awareness, and non-affordability. Thousands of patients including children and senior citizens are deprived of even primary eye care and are losing their productive years and become dependent on someone because of their visual impairment. Lions Health Foundation Alibag is the only organization in this area to provide comprehensive eye care with all necessary infrastructure and manpower. The foundation needs financial support for free cataract surgeries to be performed on thousands of poor patients in the Raigad district. As per the latest survey, more than 20000 patients are waiting for their cataract surgeries to be done, but are not able to get them done because of non- affordability and unaware of the availability of facilities. Lions Health Foundation Alibag has a plan to operate 8000 cases in a span of 2 years.
